Pushpa 2: The Rule – What Worked and What Didn’t

I enjoyed Pushpa: The Rule, even though I didn’t agree with all its creative choices. Allu Arjun’s performance stood out, and I thought he deserved the National Award for Best Actor. Performances in masala movies can absolutely be award-worthy if done well.

With Pushpa 2: The Rule, I went in with high expectations, especially since Fahadh Faasil was part of the cast. For the first two hours, the movie mostly delivered on those expectations.

What worked:

  1. Stronger story: The first half of Pushpa 2: The Rule is better than its predecessor. The storytelling is tighter, with a good mix of serious moments and humor.
  2. Impressive performances: Allu Arjun and Fahadh Faasil were fantastic. They brought energy and quirkiness that kept the movie engaging.
  3. Good humor: The jokes didn’t feel forced and came at the right moments, making the first half enjoyable.
  4. Nostalgic feel: Allu Arjun’s character reminded me of classic gangster roles from Malayalam movies, like Mohanlal in Spadikam or Rajavinte Makan. There were even moments that felt inspired by The Godfather.

What didn’t work:

The final act is where things fell apart.

  • Tired clichés: The third act relied on overused ideas we’ve seen many times before, like using a woman’s honor to boost the hero’s image.
  • Weak songs: The songs in the last hour didn’t add much and felt unnecessary.
  • Wasted potential: Fahadh Faasil’s character, which had so much promise, was underutilized and disappointing.
  • Rashmika’s role: Rashmika Mandanna had very little to do and didn’t leave much of an impact.

By the end, the movie started to feel like a poorly written TV drama. The energy fizzled out, and it left me frustrated.

Final thoughts:

Pushpa 2: The Rule starts strong with a solid first half, but the disappointing third act ruins the momentum.
